Article 3: Galloping Between Heaven and Earth: In-Depth Analysis of Three Classic Domestic Off-Road Routes

For off-road enthusiasts, exploring classic off-road routes is an unmissable feast. China has a vast territory and diverse landforms, nurturing numerous off-road routes that are both challenging and ornamental. From deserts to Gobi, from mountain roads to canyons, each route has its unique charm. This article will conduct an in-depth analysis of three classic domestic off-road routes — the Taklamakan Desert Crossing Route, the Northern Sichuan-Tibet Line Off-Road Route, and the Hook Road — to show you the different off-road styles.
Known as the challenge of the "Sea of Death", the Taklamakan Desert Crossing Route is one of the most representative desert off-road routes in China. The Taklamakan Desert is the largest desert in China, with a total area of 330,000 square kilometers. The desert is covered with rolling sand dunes, the highest of which can reach more than 200 meters. Extreme weather such as sandstorms often occur here, which is a great test for both vehicles and drivers. The classic crossing route starts from Korla, Xinjiang, passes through Luntai and Tazhong, and finally reaches Hotan, with a total length of about 1,500 kilometers. During the crossing, drivers need to master precise sand dune driving skills, learn to judge the windward and leeward slopes of sand dunes, and avoid quicksand areas; at the same time, they must plan supply points in advance and carry sufficient water, food, and fuel, because there are almost no supply facilities in the desert. Despite the numerous challenges, when you drive through the desert and see the golden sea of sand at sunrise and the magnificent sunset glow at sunset, the sense of accomplishment and shock of conquering nature is incomparable to other routes.
The Northern Sichuan-Tibet Line Off-Road Route, also known as "National Highway 317", is an off-road route that combines cultural and natural landscapes. Compared with the Southern Sichuan-Tibet Line, the Northern Sichuan-Tibet Line has more complex road conditions, higher altitude, and greater challenges, but the scenery along the way is more primitive and pure. The route starts from Chengdu, Sichuan, passes through Dujiangyan, Maerkang, and Qamdo, and finally reaches Lhasa, Tibet, with a total length of about 2,400 kilometers. Along the way, you have to climb many high mountains above 4,000 meters above sea level, such as Dongda Mountain and米拉 Mountain, cross the towering mountains of the Hengduan Mountains, and pass through many major rivers such as the Jinsha River and Lancang River. The road conditions are mainly gravel roads and winding mountain roads, and some sections may experience natural disasters such as landslides and mudslides. In addition to the complex road conditions, altitude sickness is also a problem that drivers need to face. But the charm of this route lies in that you can appreciate the Tibetan cultural customs along the way, see the ancient Tibetan villages, solemn temples, and devout believers; at the same time, you can also enjoy diverse natural landscapes such as snow-capped mountains, glaciers, grasslands, and lakes, which is a double baptism of the soul and vision.
Hook Road is located in Helan Mountain, Ningxia, and is one of the most challenging rock off-road routes in China. This route was spontaneously developed by a group of off-road enthusiasts, with a total length of about 10 kilometers. It is covered with steep rocks, narrow gullies, and vertical cliffs along the way, known as the "proving ground for off-road vehicles". Hook Road has dozens of challenge levels, each with different difficulties. Among them, the most famous ones are "Devil's Tongue" and "Heavenly Staircase". These levels require the vehicle to have extremely strong power, suspension system, and four-wheel drive performance, and also require the driver to have rich rock off-road experience and precise operating skills. Although the route is not long, every step is full of challenges. Many off-road enthusiasts are proud of conquering Hook Road. In addition, the Danxia landform along Helan Mountain is also very ornamental. The red rocks and green vegetation set off each other, forming a unique off-road scenery.
Every classic off-road route is a test of courage and skills, as well as an exploration of nature and humanity. No matter which route you choose, you must make full preparations in advance, respect nature, abide by the rules, and ensure your own safety. In the process of galloping between heaven and earth, feel the charm of off-roading and gain unique memories of your own.
